Property Taxes

We must address the issue of property taxes in this state.  Farmers, working families and small businesses are all being squeezed by soaring property tax bills.

I am pleased that we were able to reduce the property tax rate by 7 cents this legislative session but more must be done.

It does not add up that schools are seeing a steady decline in enrollment, yet property tax payers are seeing their rates go up at double the rate of inflation.  That is why I’ve proposed a cap on property taxes.  This will allow for responsible growth.  If a town wishes to pass a budget with increases greater than inflation they will be allowed to do that with a supermajority of 60 percent support.

Unfortunately, the legislature did not act on this reasonable step to help Vermont tax payers but I will continue to work to reduce the property tax burden Vermonters are faced with.

This is a key component of the Affordability Agenda
